Tammy Robacker | The Far Field

WESTPORT DOLOR

?

Your quiet breaks me apart like whitecaps
collapse before coursing a shore. The water
that eddies you floats a shapeless gray
around this bay, over this day; ebbing
grief in the horizon?s haze. Here,
where your timber boom went bust,
now you just rust craggy stumps
along an emptied dock and austere pier.

You hang an ash-splashed canvas for miles
at this beach. A comber cannot read
where stone cold sky meets gun metal sea,
as they bumble down your one dead,
bone-jumbled jetty finger anchored
by blanched boulders and uprooted trees.

The rotund tourists straggle in and wag
tongues stuck full of green salt water
taffy and old fashion donuts. Their throats
close shut around pulpy oyster shooters
quaffed starboard off spitting bottomfish
charters rented out on the cheap.

The world ends here. Where longitude crosses itself
with latitude to no absolution. Where waves genuflect
then crumble rather than crash. The sand
dollars you?ve strewn townside are cracked
to halves. Their lost flock of peace doves,
once housed in a holy shell hollow, now worthless
debris to those who divine the beachhead.

Here your gulls swoon restless and hover
above the sea?s ennui. They dip and drone
mid-air: Scavengers perpetually hung
there?aimless and leering. They swing
back and forth, steering ghost-shaped waves
in the grimy brine sky above your grave.

Have you been in a car accident? If you have, you understand how devastating the effects could be. Its possible you have suffered broken bones in the process. This is why you?ll need the services of a personal injury attorney. Los Angeles residents that are suffering from cracked ribs and dislocated shoulders have to seek help now. Aside from accidents, these lawyers also fight for the rights of victims of medical malpractice, industrial negligence, and emotional pain.

What does this person do?

A Los Angeles personal injury attorney concentrates on handling legal disputes relating to negligence and damage. In legal circles, negligence is a very broad concept. In general terms, however, negligence comes about when a person or company would not perform in a safe manner. The end result is injury or damage. There?s two kinds of negligence ? indirect and direct.

Direct negligence and indirect negligence

Differentiating between them two is easy. In a direct negligence case, the one that caused the harm is the one responsible. For example, if you were driving a car and hit someone, you?re the one at fault.

Meanwhile, here is a good example of indirect negligence. A store manager doesn?t tell his employee to clean up a spill. Not cleaning up will result in a customer slipping and breaking his bones in the process. Since the store manager didn?t do his job, the owners have to pay on behalf of their employee.

With a personal injury attorney, Los Angeles victims can get compensation for their ailments. This expert will round up the facts relating to the injury and find out who?s to blame for the mishap.

How to find one

Getting compensated for the physical or emotional pain is easy if you have a good lawyer. You can begin by asking family and friends if they know a Los Angeles personal injury attorney. It?s likely that a person you know has been in an accident before. You can also go on the Internet and do some research. There are hundreds of specialists available so be sure to find one with lots of satisfied client testimonials.

Points to be aware of when searching

When it comes to finding a personal injury attorney, Los Angeles residents should remember a few things. For starters, always find a number of lawyers to pick from so you can have several options. Next, check their individual credentials. A worthy legal representative is a person that is well versed in personal injury law. After picking one, they will meet with you to go over the facts of your case.

Answer all questions during the course of your interview. Avoid holding anything back. Your lawyer has to build a case straight away because time is of the essence. In certain regions, there?s a statute of limitation in place. Ideally, you will need to file a lawsuit on the day you received the injury.

Make it easy on yourself

You want the least amount of stress at the end of the day. You?ll need time to recover from your injuries, whether it be physical or emotional. A Los Angeles personal injury attorney will do everything in their power to secure the best payment for you.

Fed message: Economy unlikely to improve this year

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The economy we've got today is more or less the economy we've got for the rest of the year.

That's the message from the Federal Reserve, which has sharply reduced its forecast for U.S. growth. It sees unemployment barely budging in the rest of 2012.

The Fed also says the economy is under threat from Europe's debt crisis and from the prospect of sharp spending cuts and tax increases that will kick in at year's end unless Congress acts.

None of which is comforting for companies, job seekers or President Barack Obama, whose re-election hinges in part on whether the economy improves between now and November.

Until recently, many economists were hopeful that the economy would strengthen in the second half of the year. But optimism is fading as hiring and growth have slowed for a third straight spring.

To prod businesses and consumers to borrow and spend more, the Fed said at the end of a two-day policy meeting Wednesday that it would extend a program designed to drive down long-term interest rates. It also reiterated plans to keep short-term rates at record lows until at least late 2014. And it said it's ready to do more to jolt the economy if necessary.

"If we're not seeing a sustained improvement in the labor market, that would require additional action," Bernanke said in his quarterly news conference.

Here's how a weak economy for the rest of the year could affect some categories of Americans:

? Job seekers

People looking for work aren't expected to enjoy much better opportunities in the rest of 2012. The Fed thinks the unemployment rate will fall no lower than 8 percent by year's end. It's now 8.2 percent.

American employers have become wary of hiring. They added just 69,000 jobs in May. Since averaging a healthy 252,000 a month from December through February, job growth has slowed to a lackluster 96,000 a month. And Fed officials and other economists don't think hiring will accelerate in coming months.

? Retirees and savers

The Fed's continued plan to keep short-term rates super-low through 2014 isn't happy news for people who depend on investment income. When the Fed keeps the rates it controls at record lows, rates throughout the economy generally stay low, too. That's why money market funds are paying rates barely above zero ? well below inflation.

Anyone willing to lend money to the U.S. government over the next 10 years stands to receive about 1.6 percent interest. That's just about what the consumer inflation rate has been for the past 12 months. In exchange for buying long-term U.S. Treasurys, these investors will manage merely to run in place.

? President Barack Obama

Obama's re-election bid is getting no help from the economy ? the core issue in the presidential campaign. The president's political team has been hoping the unemployment rate would drop by Election Day well below the roughly 8 percent level where the Fed thinks it will be at year's end. With job growth slumping, the president must make the tough case that it would improve in a second Obama term.

Still, unemployment might not be quite the threat to Obama that it appears. Unemployment rates in seven of the 10 battleground states that will likely determine the election are lower than the national average. That trend could blunt Republican candidate Mitt Romney's effort to capitalize on weak job growth to defeat Obama.

? Borrowers

The one group of Americans who are big winners in the Fed's low-interest-rate campaign are borrowers. They are, that is, if they meet tightened credit standards for consumer and business loans.

The average national rate nationally on a fixed-rate 30-year mortgage is just 3.71 percent. That's scarcely above the 3.67 percent average earlier this month ? the lowest since long-term U.S. mortgages were introduced in the 1950s.

Mortgage rates have been sinking because they tend to track the yield on the 10-year Treasury note. Anxiety about Europe's debt crisis has led many investors to buy U.S. Treasurys, which are considered ultra-safe despite their puny yields. When demand rises for Treasurys, their yields fall.

On Wednesday, the Fed said it thinks the economy will grow between 1.9 percent and 2.4 percent this year, sharply less than in its previous estimate in April. And it's roughly the annual pace at which most economists think the economy is growing now.

"All economists have shaved down their forecasts for this year," said Sung Won Sohn, an economics professor at the Martin Smith School of Business at California State University.

Sohn said his own forecast was in line with the Fed's. He said he was surprised the Fed didn't downgrade its unemployment outlook even more based on its forecast for economic growth.

Even so, "If the Fed's forecast unfolds, that would be bad news for incumbent politicians," Sohn said. "If I were President Obama, I would be worried."

Some political strategists expect the picture the Fed sketched of the economy to play into Romney's hands.

"If I'm Mitt Romney, I immediately use Bernanke's comments to make the case that what I've been saying is right: Barack Obama isn't working, the stimulus has failed and the only way to take us out of this is to make a change in the White House," said Joe Brettell, a Republican strategist.

He said Romney's message is simple: "I'm the guy who can fix the problem."

Most people think the biggest problem is unemployment. Brian Bethune, an economics professor at Gordon College in Massachusetts, said he thinks the unemployment rate will end the year at 8.1 percent or 8.2 percent.

Bethune thinks the Fed might decide by early fall that the economy needs some aggressive new step, such as another bond buying program. The Fed has completed two such programs. It bought more than $2 trillion in Treasurys and mortgage-backed securities.

If such a program were launched and helped boost the economy, it could end up benefiting job seekers and perhaps Obama's re-election chances.

"If we are still seeing these terrible employment numbers," Bethune said, "then the Fed is going to have to consider another move. The economy can't just flop along at this level."

Bethune said the problem for incumbents like Obama is that perceptions about the economy tend to freeze about six months before an election ? even if the economy improves after that.

Even so, economists note that continued declines in oil and gas prices could spur growth by giving consumers more spending power.

On Wednesday, the Fed said it will continue a program called Operation Twist through year's end. Under the program, the Fed has been selling $400 billion in short-term Treasurys since September and buying longer-term Treasurys. The Fed said it will extend Operation Twist using $267 billion in securities.

But it might not provide much benefit. Businesses and consumers who aren't borrowing now at historically low rates aren't likely to do so just because rates dipped a little more.

David Jones, chief economist at DMJ Advisors, estimates that extending Operation Twist will lower long-term rates by only about one-tenth of a percentage point.

Design and Thought ? Psychology and User Experience ...

Design and Thought

About a month ago, Giovanni gave an informative talk titled ?Design and Thought ? Psychology and User Experience? at the Charlotte UX Meetup. The basis of his talk boiled down to how we logically apply aesthetics, complexity, affordance, and focus?to a design problem to create intuitive user experiences.

Aesthetics

small studio webisite

Giovanni?identifies?two types of aesthetics. The first type of aesthetic is surface beauty and can be safely called ?style.? It?s the aesthetic of attraction and is essentially, at least in the realm of design, an application of the principles of design. The second type of aesthetic is based upon the idea of mathematical elegance. It?s generally dependent upon a process or solution ? it?s the aesthetic of economy and succinctness.?Einstein?s?E=MC2 is an example of the aesthetic of elegance because it is an economical, succinct explanation to a complex idea.

Marcel Duchamp?s Nude Descending a Staircase is a fantastic example of both understandings of aesthetic. It is a beautiful painting, full of energy and lush color. It?s also an elegant solution to the problem of showing a time lapse action with a two dimensional, static image.

Affordance

The Design of Everyday Things, by Donald Norman, outlines cases where the understanding of how to use a thing is inherently built into how it looks. Examples of such affordances are flat plates on doors that are meant to be pushed, and handles on doors that are meant to be pulled. He also talked about direct mapping ? ex: the light switch is on the light.

Complexity

One of the papers Gio cited proposed the idea that it?s?easier for people to compartmentalize and tell one thing from another when some of the visuals are distinct and unique. Consistent visual language and structure are important. However, it?s necessary to incorporate some visual complexity to draw interest and direct a user?s attention. A couple of sites mentioned were kyan.com and apple.com.

Apple iPad Site Page

The Kyan site is a balance between complexity imagery and a demonstration of creative drive. It?s almost entirely image based, the focus being specific on the center image, and the animated transitions between each panel.?On Apple?s iPad page, text is well balanced with simple animations and visual demonstrations of complex interactions with the iPad. There?s a fair amount of explanatory copy, but the hand doing the action on the iPad removes the need to read the text explanations.

In this case, the motion causes focus and demonstrates the proper way to interface with the device. Its a great example of the ?show, don?t tell? principle.

Resources

While there is some great anecdotal reference out there that gives insight and learning to the psychology of design, there?s not as much academic research. Here are a few papers Giovanni referenced to try to bridge that gap:

Cannot access movie/TV listings on Sony Google TV

  • I have a first generation 40" Sony Google TV that I have connected to my broadband provider (Atlantic Broadband here in Miami Beach). About 10 days ago when I would go the TV/Movie listings, the cursor would spin for about 30 seconds and then come with the following message:

There is nothing to be displayed here
Here are things that you may try
    - Check your network settings
    - Refresh

I know that I am can access the internet as I can play Pandora from the TV as well as YouTube, etc.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

  • # ADS

  • First go to your settings and make sure that the app is synced to your Google account.

Next step is try a factory reset of your router.

Next step would be a factory reset of your GTV.

If it still doesn't work then try removing your router from your setup and see if it works that way.

  • Did you do anything to change how the tv operates, in example did you change your user string - or by any chance are you blocking any sites at the router level by any chance . Have you tried refreshing the page like it suggested?

Pro-bailout conservative party wins Greek election

    Pascal Rossignol / Reuters

New Democracy supporters hold flares as they celebrate in front of the Parliament in central Athens on Sunday.

By NBC News, msnbc.com staff and news services

Updated at 4:49 p.m. ET: ATHENS -??The pro-bailout New Democracy party came in first Sunday in Greece's national election, and its leader proposed forming a pro-euro coalition government. The result eased?fears of an imminent Greek exit from Europe's joint currency.

"The Greek people voted today to stay on the European course and remain in the euro zone... there will be no more adventures, Greece's place in Europe will not be put in doubt," New Democracy leader Antonis Samaras said.

He said voters chose "policies that will bring jobs, growth, justice and security."

His party beat the anti-bailout Syriza party, which wanted to cancel Greece's international bailouts.

    Yannis Behrakis / REUTERS

A Greek orthodox priest holds his ballot paper as he exits a voting booth at an Athens primary school used as a polling station on Sunday.

Syriza chief Alexis Tsipras conceded the election but vowed to continue its fight against the punishing terms of an EU/IMF bailout saving the country from bankruptcy.

"From Monday, we will continue the fight," Tsipras told supporters. "A new day for Greece has already dawned.

With 82.5 percent of the vote counted, official results showed the conservative New Democracy winning 30 percent and 130 of the 300 seats in Parliament. The radical anti-bailout Syriza party had 26.6 percent and 71 seats and the pro-bailout Socialist PASOK party came in third with 12.5 percent of the vote and 33 seats.

The anti-immigrant nationalist Golden Dawn party had 6.9 percent and 18 seats, while the Democratic left won 6.1 percent and 18 seats.

Because of a 50-seat bonus given to the party which comes first, that result would give New Democracy and PASOK 161 seats in the 300-seat parliament, in an alliance committed to a 130 billion euro ($164 billion) EU/IMF bailout keeping the country from bankruptcy.

Greek vote only buys some time in widening euro crisis

Sunday's vote was seen as crucial for Europe and the world, since it could determine whether Greece was forced to leave the joint euro currency, a move that could have potentially catastrophic consequences for other ailing European nations and the global economy. As central banks stood ready to intervene in case of financial turmoil, Greece held its second national election in six weeks after an inconclusive ballot on May 6.

The Eurozone's finance ministers said the outcome should allow for the formation of a government that will carry the support of the electorate to bring Greece back on a path of sustainable growth.

"The Eurogroup acknowledges the considerable efforts already made by the Greek citizens and is convinced that continued fiscal and structural reforms are Greece's best guarantee to overcome the current economic and social challenges and for a more prosperous future of Greece in the euro area," the group said in a statement.

"We congratulate the Greek people on conducting their election in this difficult time," the White House said in a statement.?"We hope this election will lead quickly to the formation of a new government that can make timely progress on the economic challenges facing the Greek people."

Greece has been dependent on rescue loans since May 2010, after sky-high borrowing rates left it locked out of the international markets following years of profligate spending and falsifying financial data. The spending cuts made in return have left the country mired in a fifth year of recession, with unemployment spiraling to above 22 percent and tens of thousands of businesses shutting down.

Europe may be able to muddle through but the risk is rising. "There could be a Lehman's moment if things are not properly handled," Robert Zoellick, the outgoing head of the World Bank, told Britain's Observer newspaper.

The bankruptcy of U.S. bank Lehman Brothers in September 2008 triggered a global financial slump that indebted western nations are still struggling to recover from.?

    'Most important election in history'
The ongoing uncertainty was a prime concern for Greek psychologist Sofia Arvanici, who spoke to NBC News at a polling station in a northern suburb of Athens.?

"This is Greece's most important election in history," the 36-year-old said. "We don't know whether we will have a government tomorrow, but we can't have more instability."

Bartering takes hold in austerity-wracked Greece

The European Union and International Monetary Fund have insisted that the conditions of the 130 billion euro bailout accord agreed in March must be accepted fully by a new government or funds will be cut off, driving Greece into bankruptcy.

Opinion polls show Greeks, weary after five years of deep recession, overwhelmingly favor remaining in the euro. But there is bitter anger over the repeated rounds of tax hikes, slashed spending and sharp cuts in wages.

"I voted with a heavy heart for a pro-bailout party because I want the country to stay in the euro, with the help of our European partners. I don't think the failed recipes of the left would get us out of this mess," Stratos Economou, 49, who runs a bakery shop in Athens, told Reuters.?

Germans on edge as key Greek vote nears

Zoellick and other policy makers insist that the austerity Greece is living with is preferable to the alternative.?

The Observer said the Zoellick would tell?a G-20 summit that the euro crisis could hit developing nations?hard, although clearly the effects would be felt further afield. ?

"Uncertainty in markets is now starting to increase costs for developing countries," he told the newspaper. "The ripple effects are making everybody's life harder."?

The?G-20, which brings together finance ministers and central bank governors?from 19 major economies and the European Union, will start a meeting in Mexico on Monday. ?The gathering?in the Pacific resort of Los Cabos promised to be overshadowed by the elections in Greece and mounting worries about Spain and Italy.

    ?

    ?

During Sunday's election, voters will choose a new prime minister, but the election is also considered a proxy for a much bigger question: will Greece still use the Euro or not? CNBC's Michelle Caruso-Cabrera reports.

    ?

    ?

The fate of the euro as well as the European Union itself was top of mind for finance director?Kostas Theoharis, 40, as he cast his vote near Athens.?

"The main scenario is whether the euro will exist. This is the question that needs?answered rather than whether Greece will be part of the euro,"?he told NBC News at an Athens polling station with his son Alex, 6. ?"I fail to see how Greece could leave the euro without breaking up Europe. I understand that this is a financial problem but it needs a political solution."?

U.N. suspends Syria monitoring as violence rages

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Escalating violence in Syria forced United Nations observers to suspend operations on Saturday, in the clearest sign yet that a peace plan brokered by international mediator Kofi Annan has collapsed.

Chief monitor General Robert Mood said the fighting posed a threat to his unarmed observers, one of whose patrols was fired upon four days ago, and prevented them from carrying out their mandate to oversee Annan's widely ignored April 12 ceasefire.

The Norwegian peacekeeper blamed both government troops and rebels for the relentless conflict, in which President Bashar al-Assad's forces are trying to crush an increasingly well-armed insurgency which grew out of a 15-month-old wave of protests.

"There has been an intensification of armed violence across Syria over the past 10 days," Mood said.

"The lack of willingness by the parties to seek a peaceful transition, and the push towards advancing military positions is increasing the losses on both sides."

Diplomats say Mood is expected to brief the United Nations Security Council on Monday or Tuesday about the unrest in Syria, which the head of U.N. peacekeeping described this week as a full-scale civil war.

The United States said it was consulting with international partners on "next steps" and called on Syrian authorities to uphold commitments to Annan's peace plan "including the full implementation of a ceasefire".

British Foreign Secretary William Hague condemned Assad's government for failing to halt the killing and said the worsening instability "calls into serious question the viability of the U.N. mission" in Syria.

Despite their condemnation of Assad, Washington and its Western allies have shown no appetite for a Libya-style military intervention, while veto-wielding U.N. Security Council members Russia and China have shielded Damascus from U.N. sanctions.

U.S. President Barack Obama will hold talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday on the sidelines of a G20 summit in Mexico, but expectations are low for any progress to break their deadlock on Syria.

Mood said the violence posed "significant risks" to the 300 unarmed members of the UN Supervision Mission in Syria (UNSMIS), who have been operating there since late April.

"In this high-risk situation, UNSMIS is suspending its activities. UN observers will not be conducting patrols and will stay in their locations until further notice," Mood said, noting the decision would be reviewed on a daily basis.

Last Tuesday shots were fired at a car carrying U.N. observers who were turned away from the town of Haffeh by angry Assad supporters throwing stones and metal rods at their convoy. Three U.N. cars were also damaged in May when they were caught up in an attack that killed 21 civilians in Khan Sheikhoun.

Syria's Foreign Ministry said it had been informed of Mood's decision on Friday evening and told him it understood his concern for the safety of the monitors, blaming the attacks on rebels fighting government forces.

Since the start of the ceasefire deal the "armed terrorist groups" - the label Damascus gives to anti-Assad fighters - had escalated their "criminal activities, which have often targeted the U.N. observers", said a foreign ministry statement quoted by state news agency SANA.

    HOMS BOMBARDED

Many hundreds of people, including civilians, rebels and government forces, have been killed in the two months since Annan's ceasefire deal was supposed to come into effect.

But the violence has increased sharply this month, with rebels formally abandoning any commitment to Annan's ceasefire and government forces using attack helicopters and artillery to pound opposition strongholds into submission.

The pro-opposition Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said at least 50 civilians were killed on Saturday, most of them in army shelling on the eastern suburbs of Damascus.

Activists uploaded video footage of around 10 bloodied bodies discovered in Saqba, a town on the capital's eastern fringes. Some victims appeared to have been killed with knives.

In a sign government forces were also suffering heavy losses, SANA reported on Saturday military funerals for 24 soldiers and members of security forces.

Syria restricts access to international media, making it hard to verify accounts by activists and authorities.

Activists also reported gunfire in the Mezze neighborhood of the capital, and bombardment of rebel strongholds in the central city of Homs which they said killed five people.

"There has been heavy shelling in Homs since early morning," a local activist who declined to be named said by Skype.

"Since 4 a.m. (0100 GMT) there was mortar and artillery shelling of Khalidiya, Old Homs, Jouret al-Shiyah and Qusur districts," he said

The British-based Observatory, which monitors violence in Syria through a network of local sources, said 1,000 families were surrounded in the Homs districts under fire from Assad's forces on Saturday.

Dozens of wounded people were in danger because of lack of medical equipment, it said.

France said on Friday night it was seriously concerned about what it said were reports of an imminent large-scale operation against Homs.

"The bloody repression led by Syrian authorities, which is intolerable and has caused tens of deaths in recent days, must come to an end," a Foreign Ministry spokeswoman said.

"Bashar Al Assad's regime continues to violate commitments under the Annan plan and threatens international peace and security. Sooner or later, the Security Council will have to reckon with the consequences."

The United Nations says Syrian forces have killed 10,000 people in a crackdown on protest against Assad's rule which broke out in March last year, inspired by uprisings across the Arab world which have toppled four autocratic leaders.

Syrian authorities blame the violence on foreign-backed Islamists who they say have killed at least 2,600 police and soldiers.

State television reported on Saturday security forces had killed a man it said was behind several car bombings in Damascus since December which killed scores of people.

It described Walid Ahmad al-Ayyesh as the "right-hand man of the leader of the Nusra front", a Sunni Islamist group which claimed responsibility for the attacks, saying he had overseen rigging the vehicles with explosives.

Ayyesh was killed when security forces stormed an apartment in Damascus province.

Scientists to strap cameras to Hawaiian seals

HONOLULU (AP) ? Hawaiian monk seals need an image makeover.

Some fishermen blame the endangered species for stealing their catch. There are unfounded rumors that they devour and deplete fish stocks. And at least four of them have been killed by humans in Hawaii since late last year.

To help correct the misconceptions, government scientists plan to glue submersible cameras onto the seals' backs, using the footage to prove to fishermen the animals are not harming their way of life. It may even end up on reality TV.

"It's following seals to have them tell their own story," Charles Littnan, lead scientist for the National Marine Fisheries Service's Hawaiian Monk Seal Research Program. They expect to see the seals dive for eels and fish on the ocean floor.

The "Crittercams," provided by the National Geographic Society, are the latest tactic to protect a population that is down to just 1,100 in Pacific Ocean waters around Hawaii. The killings were painful blows to a species on course to disappear in 50 to 100 years.

The deaths have come as resentment simmers while the species experiences a modest rebound around Kauai, Oahu and other islands where Hawaii's humans live.

There have been cases of people pestering seals: state officials found an Oahu teenager throwing rocks at a seal at a wildlife sanctuary in January. On Friday, the state said a court fined him $1,000 and sentenced him to 80 hours of community service for trespassing and harassing the monk seal.

Archaeological evidence ? like monk seal bones in a human trash pit dating between the 15th and 18th centuries ? shows the seals were around on these islands long ago. But most were hunted for their meat and fur by the early 1900s.

The seals were then generally only found among tiny, remote atolls northwest of Hawaii's main islands.

Their numbers started increasing about a decade ago around the main islands. Now, they regularly haul up on the sands of Poipu on Kauai and the rocky shorelines of Kaena Point in northwest Oahu. They've even appeared amid throngs of sunbathing tourists in Waikiki.

Though the species is ancient and has inhabited Hawaii for millions of years, their growth is making them look like new arrivals to humans who haven't seen them in their midst for more than a century.

Starting this August, biologists will capture several seals, sedate them and use epoxy to attach the cameras to their hides. Littnan hopes the footage will prove several assumptions untrue.

Some people think, for example, that seals operate like swarms of locusts ? tough to do when there are only 200 of them in the main Hawaiian Islands. Others believe the seals eat 600 pounds of fish a day ? not plausible, since an adult weighs between 375 and 500 pounds.

"That's not even remotely physically possible," Littnan said.

The researchers are inviting fishermen and budding scientists at Hawaii high schools to join the research teams and watch the footage as it comes in. Students can submit essays to the Monk Seal Foundation by next month to win a spot on the research team. If the video proves compelling, the seals might see some TV spotlight.

    Crittercams have changed perceptions before.

When scientists first used the cameras to study Hawaiian monk seals, most believed the animals fed among coral reefs. But Crittercams showed them swimming to barren sandy areas, diving to the ocean floor, flipping over rocks and eating fish and eels found underneath.

Researchers only attached cameras to seals in the northwestern Hawaiian islands that time. Seals around the main Hawaiian islands haven't been studied in the same way.

"Seeing what the animals really did rather than guessing about it was incredibly useful," said Kyler Abernathy, the National Geographic Society's remote imaging director of research.

Walter Ritte, a Native Hawaiian and longtime activist who has spoken against monk seal killings, said everything that can be done must be done to help the seals. But he's not sure the research will change attitudes.

In a state with deep respect for Hawaiian tradition and elders who know it well, Ritte said, elders should more actively pass on cultural legends ? like stories of the deity Kuulakai ? that teach how to properly fish, care for the ocean and manage stocks.

"All of that worked for thousands of years, and it's the essence of our culture," Ritte said. "We need to go back and remind the people who live here that that's the essence of who we are in the state of Hawaii. It goes in a total opposite direction from what is happening with the seals."
