Adelaide Screenwriter: Book review: Screenwriting Tricks of the Trade
I remember reading Screenwriting Tricks of the Trade by William Froug for the first time years ago, and quoting part of it at a screenwriter's meeting. It was the first book I'd come across which explicitly highlighted the failures of the Three-Act Theory, and I was delighted. Rereading it now, I'm more impressed than ever.?William Froug is an Emmy award-winning American television writer and producer. Shows he worked on include: The Twilight Zone, Gilligan's Island, Bewitched, The Dick Powell Show, Charlie's Angels, and The New Twilight Zone. He has also written numerous books on screenwriting, including Screenwriting Tricks of the Trade, Zen and the Art of Screenwriting
This is a book worth buying, reading and rereading. What follows are some selected quotes:
- My method is simple. See movies, as many as possible, and take from each one the important lessons that each has to offer.
- I never see a film without analyzing the story structure, the core conflict, the line of action and counter-action, the opening signal, the theme, the protagonist, the antagonist, and so on.
- Some screenwriters will think about a story for years before committing it to paper.
- If you can write one really terrific scene per day, you are doing very well, indeed. Sometimes a single scene will take several days to work out properly.
- Don't place yourself on self-imposed deadlines.
- The secret of success as a screenwriter is simple: Keep the seat of your pants to the seat of your chair.
- Work out as many of the story problems that you can before you begin to write. Otherwise, you might very well fall into the writer's worst trap, writing in circles...
- A dramatic story is any series of events having vivid, emotional, conflicting, striking interest or results.
- It doesn't matter one bit how often your story has been told before; you must retell it better, with a fresh and different approach. If you can do that, your story will seem like the newest idea ever presented.
- When you tell an old story in a new way, it becomes a new story.
- Old stories never die, they often merely improve with the retelling.
- Character is story and story is character; they are each by-products of the other.
- I have found character to be the single best story-source for drama.
- The most popular game in Hollywood is recycling. Hardly a meeting goes on without beginning or diverting into discussions of what qualities previous movies had that made them winners.
- If you hope to participate in these professional story conferences, you'd damn well better be film literate.
- In order to create viable art that will hold someone's attention, you must have dramatic tension. Which, in screenwriting, is created by a line of action and opposing forces.
- Tension = Attention.
- Great screenplays have a single line of action and equally powerful opposing forces.?
- Your protagonist does not have to be likeable.
- What you must create is a protagonist who is fascinating, compelling, interesting, and understandable.?
- Scorsese is often called "America's greatest director" on the strength of a body of work in which all the characters in his movies are various degrees of wicked and miserable people.?
- Watching villainy lets people vent their rage in a harmless way.
- Unless the threat is deadly serious, it's a joke and your protagonist will be ridiculed.
- Try to avoid static locations such as offices, hotel rooms, park benches? any place where you are apt to have two or more characters sitting around talking to each other.
- If, on the other hand, the scene must be played in a room, make certain it has a strong emotional dynamic, that something important is being talked about, and that there is tension or conflict between the talkers.
- What works best in scenes is what works best in stories?a strong element of surprise.
- In building your scene, do not tell us where we have been or where we are going next.
- Avoid entrances and exits.
- Scenes will play and write better if each character in your scene has a single goal or purpose for this particular scene.
- Every character must have an attitude to make the scene play.
- Look for the subtext in every scene?what's really going on as opposed to what appears to be going on.
- Creating new and fresh scenes is one of the most important aspects of becoming a successful screenwriter. For this reason, I have lost my infatuation with Syd Field's paradigm.
- If you like formulas, buy Syd's book Screenplay
. It will help some writers and hinder others.
- I know Syd Field and respect him; we served on the Writers Guild Academic Liaison Committee together, and I think his contribution to understanding story structure is an important one. But, like all formulas, his tends to wear itself out with repeated use.
- The great American movies usually defy formula writing.
- I attended a seminar on "Film & Literature." One of the panelists remarked, surprisingly, that all movies are told in three acts, to which fellow-panelist screenwriter William Goldman remarked wryly, "Really, I didn't know that."
- The reality is that there are no clearly defined "Acts" in screenplays. An "Act" is whatever you choose to say it is.
- When you structure your movie, there is no one-size-fits-all.
- Modern moviegoers are annoyed when you show or tell them something they have already figured out for themselves. Trust your audiences; they are not as dumb as the cynics would have you believe.
- An outline might be helpful but most certainly is not necessary for all screenwriters. Again, no one-size-fits-all guideline applies.
- The best way to tell your story is the way the story itself dictates. Do not try to contort it into a predetermined form.
- The idea that all screenplays are written in three "acts" is nonsense. The truth is many screenplays use five acts, six acts, two acts, or any number of large, developmental story sections.?
- Avoid rigidity, it is the death of creativity.
- It is helpful to know your theme before you begin to write, though it is not absolutely necessary, but you had better know it before you finish the screenplay.
- A theme is simply a proposition leading to a conclusion.
- Some call the theme a premise or a thesis. It does not matter what you call it, but you cannot write an outstanding screenplay without knowing what it is about.?
- Many screenwriters complete their screenplays without ever knowing what they're about. The result is, almost invariably, an empty and unsuccessful piece of work.
- There is more than one theme in a good movie; there are often many minor themes running concurrently, but there is only one major theme.
- Frank Pierson told an important story about the need to find the theme or "take" on your protagonist before you write your screenplay. Frank had accepted a contract to write what he later titled Dog Day Afternoon, but he simply could not figure out what his protagonist was all about. He finally decided (the Al Pacino character) was a man trying to make everybody happy in all circumstances.?
- The theme of this excellent movie is, If you try to please all the people all the time, you are doomed to failure.
- One minute per page is average playing time for a movie. However, this can vary as much as twenty or thirty minutes for a two hour fim, depending on the pace of the director.
- A story must be underway on page one; something is happening or about to happen.
- You do not need to set up your protagonist; your protagonist must "set up" himself or herself by his or her behavior and by the circumstances in which we discover him or her. Nothing more needs to be said.
- Actors can say more with an exchange of glances than all your wordiness can convey. Trust the actors. I do not mean you should trust them as writers?far from it. Trust them to deliver much more than you ever expected from their first performance. Like it or not, if you are determined to be a dramatist, actors will be your lifetime collaborators.
- What your audience does not know but wants to know is an excellent device to hold their attention.
- The way people actually talk to each other and movie dialogue have nothing in common. Your job as a dramatist is to create the illusion of real dialogue. It is easy only if you work very hard at it, edit yourself carefully, rewrite it endlessly, polish it, until the characters say only what must be said and nothing else.
- Write what you truly believe in, what excites you, what you care about?the kind of movie you would pay money to see. That's the formula.

Black Keys, Neil Young, others to perform in NYC
NEW YORK (AP) ? More than 60,000 people are expected to descend upon Central Park on Saturday evening for a free concert featuring the Black Keys and Neil Young aimed at calling attention to poverty worldwide.
Dubbed the Global Citizen Festival, it also is slated to feature K'naan, Band of Horses and Foo Fighters. Video of the event is to be streamed worldwide.
The concert was scheduled around the meeting of the United Nations General Assembly in New York this week and organizers used an innovative approach to ticket distribution so that many concert-goers had no choice but to learn about an array of global problems such as polio, malaria, child mortality and clean drinking water.
Anyone wanting free tickets had to register at globalcitizen.org, which then required users to watch videos or read information about poverty-related issues. Each time material was consumed, users could earn points toward a drawing for tickets. Points were also accumulated by sharing information via Twitter or Facebook.
"Our social media campaign has been off the charts," said Hugh Evans, CEO and co-founder of the Global Poverty Project. The approach demonstrates a new model for harnessing digital tools that may be repeated for other big events with political or social messages.
Organizers said more than 71,000 people had signed up online, resulting in more than 3.5 million page views. On average, they spent just over six minutes consuming content or sharing information. Nearly 200,000 pieces of information were shared on Facebook, and just a bit more than that on Twitter. About 170,000 people signed petitions via the site, and there were 98,000 videos viewed to completion.
Evans said the project achieved its goals, set out last year, of getting more than 100,000 people to take action related to extreme poverty while telling a new story about the challenges. To that end, the site conveys information in detailed, documentary-like accounts and uses an array of video, graphics and stories that are friendly for mobile and digital consumption.
Financially, he said, the project also achieved its yearlong goal ? working with an array of organizations like the U.S. Fund for UNICEF, the Earth Institute and Rotary International ? of garnering $500 million in commitments to help fight poverty.
So now what?
Evans said that he's hoping the audience, built online and at the concert, will continue efforts by tweeting President Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney to halve extreme poverty by 2015. And Evans is working on an announcement in October or November about "a major rock band" getting involved with the anti-poverty efforts.

Gunman opens fire in Minneapolis, "several" killed
MINNEAPOLIS (Reuters) - A gunman opened fire inside a Minneapolis sign company on Thursday, killing several people including himself and wounding four others, police and hospital officials said.
Minneapolis Police spokesman Steve McCarty said "several" people were dead at Accent Signage Systems, including the gunman. He did not give the number of people killed. He declined to identify those killed or wounded, and said he did not know what connection the shooter may have had with the business, if any.
Three men were listed in critical condition at Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis and another person had injuries not thought to be life threatening, a spokeswoman said.
A representative from Accent Signage Systems could not be reached for comment. A July article in a local business publication said the company had 28 employees.
Police cordoned off the area around the company and held residents back for at least a couple of hours.
The company is located on a tree-lined residential street. "It's the only industrial business right in the middle of a residential neighborhood," Minneapolis Mayor R. T. Rybak said in a telephone interview with Reuters. "In a great neighborhood and a great business, we have a horrible tragedy."
Rybak said he could not remember anything similar ever happening in Minneapolis. "I don't think that it has," he said.
Governor Mark Dayton said in a statement: "I deplore this senseless violence. There is no place for it anywhere in Minnesota. I extend my deepest condolences to the families and friends of the innocent people killed or wounded."
The Minneapolis shooting comes a month after a work-related shooting near the Empire State Building in New York, which killed two people and wounded nine. This followed an July mass shooting in a crowded cinema in Colorado and an attack on a Sikh temple in Wisconsin in August, which rekindled debate about gun control in the United States.

Obama Ad Features 30 Seconds of Romney
VIRGINIA BEACH - President Obama's re-election campaign is giving Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney some free airtime in seven battleground states, but it's not the welcome kind.
A new 30-second Obama TV ad features Romney entirely in his own words, speaking at the now infamous secretly-taped fundraiser earlier this year when he referred to the " 47 percent" of Americans who he said will support Obama no matter what he does in his campaign.
While Team Obama has used Romney's controversial remarks in two previous ads, the new spot is the first to run them in extended form and without any other added narration or commentary.
Audio from the event plays over still images of faces of everyday Americans, presumably members of the 47 percent, including families, senior citizens, workers, and veterans.
"There are 47 percent of the people who will vote for the president no matter what, who are dependent upon government, who believe that they are victims, who believe that government has a responsibility to care for them, who believe that they are entitled to health care, to food, to housing, to you-name-it," Romney says.
"And they will vote for this president no matter what. And so my job is not to worry about those people," he tells donors. "I'll never convince them they should take personal responsibility and care for their lives."
The ad - titled "My Job" - will air in New Hampshire, Virginia, Florida, Ohio, Iowa, Nevada and Colorado, the Obama campaign said.
Democrats have used Romney's words to suggest that he would not care about all Americans as president, a claim the candidate has strongly rejected. Shortly after the secret recording surfaced, Romney said that he was speaking politically at the time and that he is committed to being a president of "the 100 percent."

Baby dies after dad forgets day care drop-off

A 6-month-old baby in Florida was discovered dead in a car Tuesday after the father forgot to drop her off at day care, police said.
Miami-Dade Police confirmed the girl was found at Doral Academy Preparatory School Tuesday afternoon after she had been left in a car seat for approximately nine hours. ?
The baby, Rosalyn Ramos, was taken to Miami Children?s Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Police said the baby?s father, Lazaro Ramos, was supposed to have dropped her off at a daycare center about 9 a.m. Tuesday, but apparently forgot she was in the car and went about his day.
The father dropped one of his children off at the school and then drove to work and left the baby in the back seat of the car, police said. He reportedly told police it was not part of his routine to care for the baby. When he returned to pick his child up from the school, the baby was discovered and police were called to the scene.

It was unclear where the car was parked during the day. Temperatures in Miami Tuesday reached 88 degrees.
Miami-Dade Police Detective Aida Fina-Milian called the incident a tragic accident, but told NBC News the investigation is ongoing. Ramos is currently in police custody.?

Australians richer after statistician 'finds' $338 billion

SYDNEY - Australians are suddenly a whole lot better off after the government statistician "found" A$325 billion ($338 billion) in share assets previously unrecognized.
The Australian Bureau of Statistics on Thursday released its latest report on household assets which included massive upward revisions to estimates for equity holdings. Total financial assets were now put at A$3.1 trillion at the end of March, compared to the originally reported A$2.77 trillion.
The revision is worth roughly A$14,380 for every one of the country's 22.6 million people.

"This issue incorporates new estimates for households holding of unlisted shares and other equity in other private non financial corporations," the statistician drily noted.
The value of such equity is now put at A$383 billion at the end of March, compared to the original A$91 billion.
"The Bureau of Statistics has effectively 'found' A$325 billion in household wealth," said Craig James, chief economist at CommSec.
The poorest countries in the world
Total financial assets also rose further in the second quarter to stand at A$3.11 trillion by the end of June, up A$76 billion on the same period last year.
The upward revisions to wealth also mean households do not look quite as stretched when compared to their debts.
The ABS now estimates the ratio of debt to liquid assets was 129.1 percent in March, well down on the original estimate of 170.1 percent.
There have been long-standing concerns that the high debt levels of Australian households left them vulnerable to an economic shock such as a sharp rise in the, currently low, 5.1 percent unemployment rate.

UNITED NATIONS (AP) ? President Barack Obama is telling the U.N. General Assembly that he wants to resolve the dispute over Iran's nuclear program through diplomacy but that the time to do that is not unlimited.
Obama says Iran has failed time after time to demonstrate that its nuclear program is peaceful and has failed to meet its obligations to the United Nations. He also says the Iranian government has been propping up the dictatorship in Syria and supporting terrorist groups abroad.
The president says, quote, "the United States will do what we must to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon."
This is Obama's final international address before the November elections.

One of Hong Kong's wealthiest men has placed a "marriage bounty" on his lesbian daughter's head, offering nearly ?40 million to the man who successfully woos her.
Property magnate Cecil Chao Sze-tsung announced the HK$500 million reward this week after reports that his 33-year-old daughter Gigi Chao, a University of Manchester graduate, had married her long-term female partner in France.
"I don't mind whether he is rich or poor. The important thing is that he is generous and kind-hearted," Mr Chao told the South China Morning Post, describing reports about his daughter's marriage as "false".
The extravagant tycoon's offer blended Blind Date and The Apprentice with Mr Chao claiming he hoped to help the successful suitor kick-start a business.
He told the South China Morning Post the prize money was "an inducement to attract someone who has the talent but not the capital to start his own business".
"Gigi is a very good woman with both talents and looks. She is devoted to her parents, is generous and does volunteer work," he added.
According to the report however, Ms Chao married Sean Eav, her girlfriend of seven years, in France on April 4.
A photograph posted on Ms Chao's public Facebook page confirmed that she and her partner were Paris-bound in April this year. "Going to Paris to buy a few businesses," read the caption to a picture apparently taken in the first class section of a plane.
The Facebook profile of Ms Chao, who is a University of Manchester architecture graduate, reads: "Helicopter Pilot. Social entrepreneur. Creator of expressions in colour and emotion."
It also describes her as an executive director at her father's Hong Kong-based property firm, Cheuk Nang.
Ms Chao's LinkedIn profile says she worked with British architect Sir Terry Farrell for two years.
Mr Chao's controversial move to recruit a husband for his lesbian daughter appeared to contradict a description Ms Chao gave of her father in a 2007 interview.
"My father took a hands-off approach in parenting. I see him as a friend more than a father," she told HK Magazine. "My parents never pressure me with high expectations."
Speaking to the South China Morning Post, Mr Chao denied he would force his daughter to marry a man against her will.
But comments posted on the website of the Hong Kong newspaper were widely hostile to his "marriage bounty".
"How humiliating for this poor girl," wrote one reader. "Mr Chao needs to come out of denial and just be happy that he has such a beautiful daughter who appears to have found happiness with a partner whom she loves.
"Cecil, you sound like you're selling your daughter," commented another.
"Get with the times."

Samsung has already patched 'dirty USSD' vulnerability for Galaxy S III
If you were worried about stumbling onto a malicious website and accidentally wiping your Samsung Galaxy S III or other TouchWiz smartphone or slate, you can probably breathe easy. It's likely you already have firmware on your device which isn't vulnerable to the so-called dirty USSD code, and if not, you can download it now, according to Samsung. The company issued the following statement on the matter: "We would like to assure our customers that the recent security issue concerning the Galaxy S III has already been resolved through a software update. We recommend all Galaxy S III customers download the latest software update, which can be done quickly and easily via the Over-The-Air (OTA) service." It turns out we couldn't reproduce the bug earlier as we already had the latest update, and you should probably check to see that you do, as well. Meanwhile, we're also checking to see if other Touchwiz devices have been patched, so don't forget to watch what you click.
