Heart Health Exercise Tips | Personal Training ? ? Momentum Fitness

Once again it?s a friendly reminder from your Vancouver personal trainer that February is Heart month! I?m sure you?ve been reading numerous articles relating to this, including my omega 3 blog from last week, but today my focus is on exercise! Leading a sedentary lifestyle is one of the top risk factors for heart disease. That being said, it is also one of the easiest hazards to solve. Regular exercise, especially aerobic (cardiovascular), will have a hugely positive impact on your heart health.

By strengthening our heart and cardiovascular system you will:

  • Naturally decrease your resting heart rate
  • Improve your circulation and make your body more efficient at using oxygen
  • Increase your energy level, which in turn will decrease your tiredness and any shortness of breath
  • Lower your blood pressure
  • Reduce stress and tension
  • Aid in reducing your body fat

Now I think you will agree that these above mentioned benefits are quite obvious. You don?t have to be a cardiologist to figure them out. You do, however, have to be responsible for actually becoming active so you can begin acquiring these amazing heart healthy profits. If you are new to an exercise regime, don?t be intimidated.

Here are some tips from your Vancouver personal trainer for you to follow and help you get started:

  1. Always ensure that you receive consent from your doctor beforehand if you have any concerns about making exercise a new part of your lifestyle.
  2. Hire a Vancouver personal trainer to guarantee that your new exercise program is completely safe and appropriate for your fitness level.
  3. Work your way up to 20-30 minutes of cardiovascular activity at least 3-4x/ week.
  4. Though aerobic exercise has the most significant influence on heart health, don?t completely neglect the other components of fitness (strength training, flexibility and body composition (which includes % of body fat/nutrition).
  5. Always make sure you warm up and cool down appropriately. See these heart healthy exercise tips.

If your doctor has any concerns regarding your health or you have a pre-existing heart ailment, these additional tips should be followed diligently:

  1. Constantly monitor your heart rate either by using the RPE scale (rate of perceived exertion) and not allowing your level to exceed 3-5, or wear a heart rate monitor while exercising.
  2. Keep your pace relatively slow and always balance your program with work/rest phases.
  3. Avoid isometric exercises, which may increase your blood pressure.
  4. Avoid exercising outdoors during extreme hot/cold weather. This could interfere with your circulation and impede your breathing.
  5. Stay hydrated at all times.
  6. Finally STOP if:
    1. You feel over fatigued or short of breath.
    2. You have a rapid or irregular heartbeat or palpitations.
    3. You experience chest pain, dizziness or feel weak. (You must discuss these symptoms with your doctor or Vancouver personal trainer!)

Anybody can get heart smart with regular exercise. Why wouldn?t you want to change your lifestyle ever so slightly so you can live happier, healthier and longer? If you haven?t begun celebrating heart month yet, there is truly no time like the present. Contact us at mfit.ca if you need some guidance. Make it a commitment for February and every month/year to come!

UN demands 'unhindered' aid access to Syria

Syrian troops are now in control of Baba Amr, ?while rebel fighters have apparently fled. ITV's John Irvine reports.

By msnbc.com staff and news services

?The U.N. Security Council is deploring the rapidly deteriorating humanitarian situation in Syria and calling on authorities there to grant U.N. humanitarian chief Valerie Amos "unhindered access," according to The Associated Press.

A statement -- the first on Syria to be approved by the council in seven months -- is significant because it requires the agreement of all 15 council members, including Russia and China, who last month vetoed two resolutions condemning the Syrian government's bloody crackdown and calling for President Bashar Assad to step down.

While a U.N. statement is not legally binding on Syria, it does reflect the growing concern of the council about the impact of the year-old conflict on Syria's civilian population.

Syrian rebels retreated Thursday from a neighborhood in Homs that they had held for months, saying they were running out of weapons and humanitarian conditions were catastrophic after almost four weeks of government bombardment.

Within hours of the rebels' withdrawal, President Bashar Assad's government granted permission for the International Committee of the Red Cross to enter the besieged neighborhood of Baba Amr in Homs on Friday. Human rights workers have been appealing for access to Baba Amr for weeks.

"The ICRC and the Syrian Arab Red Crescent received today from the Syrian authorities the green light to enter Baba Amr tomorrow to bring in much-needed assistance including food and medical aid, and to carry out evacuation operations," spokesman Hicham Hassan told The Associated Press.

Earlier, rebels told journalists that a few fighters had remained behind in the shattered quarter to cover the "tactical withdrawal" of their comrades. The withdrawal appeared to be an agreement between the two sides in order to avoid a showdown, the BBC reported.

Syrian forces, which shelled Baba Amr earlier in the day despite world alarm at the plight of civilians trapped there, said they were in full control of the district, the BBC reported.

The head of the Free Syrian Army, Col. Riyad Assad, told the BBC that government troops had moved in and were combing the area. The Free Syrian Army is composed mainly of Syrian soldiers who have defected and volunteer civilians.

A senior official in the FSA earlier told Reuters that rebels in Baba Amr were fending off more than 7,000 government troops. Opposition forces had promised to step up attacks elsewhere in Syria to try to relieve the pressure.

Reports from the city could not be verified immediately due to tight government restrictions on media operations in Syria.

Also on Thursday, Kuwait's parliament said it would support the rebel Free Syrian Army, and called on the Kuwaiti government to cut ties with Assad.

The parliament, which has limited legislative powers, called for Assad to be prosecuted for crimes against his people.

'Whatever the cost'
The 4th Armored Division, which was leading the assault on Homs, is commanded by Maher Assad, the president's younger brother, who has won a reputation for ruthlessness during the past year of revolt against the government.

A Lebanese official close to Damascus said Assad's government was determined to regain control of Homs, Syria's third city, which straddles the main north-south highway.

"They want to take it, whatever happens, without restraint, whatever the cost," the official told Reuters, asking not to be named.

He said defeat for the rebels in Homs, a city of 1 million people, would leave the opposition without any major stronghold in Syria, easing the crisis for Assad, who remained confident he could survive.

Smugglers take 'path of death' to supply Syria revolt

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton told members of Congress on Tuesday that Assad could be considered a war criminal.

While shelling continues on Homs, it was confirmed journalist Paul Conroy, of the Sunday Times, who was wounded in the attack that killed reporter Marie Colvin and French photographer Remi Ochlik, is safely out of Syria.  ITN's Tim Ewart reports.

The U.N. estimates that more than 7,500 people have been killed since the anti-Assad struggle started in March 2011, when protesters inspired by successful Arab Spring uprisings against dictators in Tunisia and Egypt took to the streets in Syria.

Syria's government said in December that "armed terrorists" had killed more than 2,000 soldiers and police during the unrest.

Journalists escape to Lebanon
On Thursday, French President Nicolas Sarkozy said wounded French freelance journalist Edith Bouvier had arrived in Lebanon from Syria along with French photographer William Daniels.

Bouvier's family confirmed the news of her arrival in Lebanon to French TV channel France24.

Sarkozy, in Brussels for a European summit, told reporters that Bouvier would be flown home to France in a government plane. The flight could happen as soon as Thursday evening if doctors agreed, he said.

"Edith Bouvier and William Daniels are safely in Lebanon and will very shortly be under the protection of our embassy in Beirut," he said.

Bouvier's femur was shattered during heavy shelling of Homs's rebel-held Baba Amr district, which killed veteran Sunday Times war correspondent Marie Colvin and French photographer Remi Ochlik last week.

Meanwhile, Spanish reporter Javier Espinosa, one of several Western journalists trapped in Baba Amr for a week, crossed to Lebanon on Wednesday, an activist said, following the escape on Tuesday of wounded British photographer Paul Conroy.

Thirteen Syrians were killed while aiding?Conroy's escape, the activist group Avaaz said.

The Local Coordination Committees, a human rights monitoring group, said Bouvier had previously refused to leave Baba Amr without the Syrians who were wounded by shelling while attempting to help her escape, and she has called on the French ambassador for help.

My Studio Tour and an Imaginisce Tool Giveaway!

Welcome to my Studio Tour! (and I-Top giveaway!)

In honor of my creative space being on the "I-Space" feature on the Imaginisce Blog today, I'm doing a personal giveaway on my blog!

I'm giving away an Imaginisce I-Top Tool package to one of my wonderful followers. ?You'll find out what's in the prize package and how you can win at the end of this post so read on...

You may have seen my craft room earlier this year, but I've made a few changes and updated it a bit lately.

My space is a 450 square foot loft in our home where I like to come at least once a day to create. ?The photos make it look a bit cramped, but it's actually very open and spacious.

I wanted to have a place where a lot of people can come over to scrapbook or make cards or home decor projects together, so there are 6 desk spaces with chairs. ?I got the desks and filing cabinets from IKEA.

?Each area has it's own function, whether it be sewing, scrapbooking, die cutting, vinyl work, a computer area, stamping area, jewelry making, etc. and all of my supplies and tools are organized so that each area has everything for that type of crafting.

My punches are on the wall for easy access, and my border punches are in the drawer below.

?These rails are actually kitchen rails from IKEA called Bygel rails. ?They perfect for punches, and are available in two different lengths.

These shelves are from Hobby Lobby and are great because they have a lip on them so things don't roll off. ?Cartridges fit perfectly on them (unless you have too many, then they hang off the edge :)

?This is the view when I enter the room. ?The walls are a pale blue called "Enamelware" by Martha Stewart Paint. ?I got it at Home Depot. ?The other color I loved was "Vintage Map" which is a little more green, and also would have been great in this room.

The accents are all black and white with a damask pattern. ?I made the valance with fabric from Hobby Lobby. ?The shelf, dressforms, vases, flowers, and most of the frames in the room are also from Hobby Lobby.

This clock I found at Target, and the vinyl lettering is a decor element from Stampin' Up!

This is the sewing area. ?The table is the largest one in the room, which is great when you're dealing with very large pieces of fabric. ?I do a lot of sewing on layouts and cards as well.

?I LOVE TWINE! ?(Can you tell?) ?I keep the wrappers on them so I can remember the names of the colors.

These items are all from Hobby Lobby. ?The room has a very French feel. ?I hope to visit there someday, but for now I have Eiffel Towers all over my craft room.

Inside the white cabinet is my stamp sets, albums, and craft supplies for my kids. ?They love to come up here with me and draw, paint, draw on their chalkboard, and play with play-doh. ?I have a child's easel in this room for them as well.

This is the area on the left side of the room, and is where most of my storage is. ?I keep my stamping supplies here, as well as my inks and markers, adhesives, watercolors, prismacolors, and everything else "artsy." ?

And this is my main desk. ?I love this grid mat more than I can express. ?It's by Martha Stewart Crafts and is enormous! ?Definitely a must have.

The large white boxes are where I keep the things I want to keep, like school programs, birthday cards, mementos from special events, my kids' art work, etc. ?Each family member has one, as well as one for family events and trips. ?I eventually incorporate these items into my albums with the layout that goes along with the event. ?It's a nice way to store them so I don't have "piles" of stuff everywhere.

This is a large vinyl lettering element that I created on my computer and cut. ?It's the first thing I see when coming up the stairs into the room. ?(The wall color looks brownish in this photo, but it's really more of a soft robin egg blue).

?These paint brushes belonged to my husband's grandmother, as well as her oil paint set in the blue case. ?I'm honored that she gave them to me. ?The photos are of me and five generations on my mother's side, all about age 18. ?It's very inspiring to have this and to be able to look at their pictures every day.

My Clip-It-Up and ink pad storage. ?I love my Clip-It-Up more and more each day (and it gets more and more full each day, too).

My new peg board!

It's one of the newest additions to the room. ?It became very necessary as I began designing for more and more companies. ?I got the idea from Marielle?who was on the Imaginisce design team last year. ?I love how everything's visible and accessible, and I also love how everyone who comes in this room can see the products of the companies that I love. :)

?This is my computer desk. ?Sadly I lost my desktop Mac computer this year. ?It died of old age :) ?For now I just have a laptop. ?I love my Artisan 835 photo printer. ?It's remarkable how well photos turn out. ?It's essential for the times when I need a photo and don't have time to have one printed at a store or online. ?The quality is excellent. ?I highly recommend it, other than that it can't print 12x12. ?Five stars, two thumbs up :)

Here's how I store my patterned paper. ?I organize it by theme, and sub categorize it by manufacturer. ?I have a patterned paper problem and can't stop buying it. ?I have some treasures in here, like Wild Asparagus by My Mind's Eye. ?Most of my paper is Bo Bunny, Fancy Pants, My Mind's Eye, Echo Park, Doodlebug and Imaginisce, but there's also plenty of American Crafts, Creative Imaginations, Stampin Up, Making Memories, and a new favorite of mine: Pink Paislee. ?

? And here's the far end of the room. ?Notice how I like things in rainbow order?

This is how I store my loose buttons and flowers, glitter, glimmer mists & stickles.

?This is a darling idea from Heidi Swapp I saw on My Craft Channel. ?It's called a "Clip Frame." ?HERE is a link to the video. ?I love it because it's super cute, and I can switch out my calendars each month.

?This is where my Cricut Expression lives when it's not being used.
This white cabinet is the perfect size for the machine to fit into.

And last but not least is my Jetmax storage for solid cardstock and other tools. ?Here's where I keep my embossing folders, Big Shot dies, Imaginisce tools, misting tools and supplies, chipboard, scoring tool, trays, and ribbon.

My Imaginisce tools! ?(Notice the new I-Magicut? ?It's fantastic! ?LOVE it!)

?I found these "tackle boxes" at Michael's and I love them because they're the perfect size for my Imaginisce tools, and the dividers are movable, so you can design it how you want it.

?This one's for my I-Rock and D-Stress supplies.....

?And this one's for my I-Top daddies, templates and large and extra large heads.

I keep all the toppers on the left side by size, and the bottoms divided by size and style on the right.

Speaking of the I-Top......
