Does Your Child Play Well With Others ... - Self Improvement

Establishing social relationships is one of the earliest milestones children of school age achieve. These interactions begin to build what will be their lifelong socialization habits. Learning how to meet new people, make friends, and get along with others are all critical skills.

Some children, however, are challenged more than others in this important area of life. If you recognize that your child is struggling with making friends and sustaining connections, you can implement strategies to help them succeed socially.

Use these techniques to help your child learn important social skills that will serve them well their entire life:

  1. Establish and maintain open communication. Provide plenty of verbal encouragement to help your child build confidence in social interactions.
  2. Keep your eyes open. Notice how your child relates to other children in the neighborhood, at school and during extracurricular activities.
  • Does he seem excessively shy? Does he stand alone, waiting for others to approach him? Or do classmates make efforts but he doesn?t respond? You can gather information about your child?s social life simply by observing him in the presence of peers.
  • When your child performs socially appropriate behavior, mention it later. Say something like, ?It was nice of you to offer a cookie to Jim today.? Reinforce any positive actions you observed.
  1. Set up a play date at your house. Talk with your child first about inviting a friend to come over to play. For example, you could start the conversation by asking her opinion, like, ?Sally, would you like for Patty to come over to play Saturday morning??
  • Sally will most likely say, ?Yes.? If she says ?no,? inquire about why she doesn?t want Patty to come over.
  • Arrange the play date with the other parent(s). To ensure the kids won?t get bored or tired, avoid making the first one too long. Depending on your child?s age, 1-2 hours should be adequate. Have some snacks on hand.
  1. Ask your child the day before the play date how she?d like to spend the time. This conversation prompts her to consider activities she?d enjoy. Allow her to choose the activity as long as it?s safe, inside your home or in your yard, and is feasible (consider the weather).
  • If your child doesn?t offer an idea, be encouraging and say, ?I?m sure the two of you will come up with something fun to do.? Refrain from micro-managing the play date, if possible.
  • This conversation plants the idea that when we have friends over, we share time doing something fun that we both enjoy. Also, she learns that being a friend requires some effort. Posing the question is a subtle way to teach her how to be appropriately social.
  1. Make your home a fun place for kids. Doing so might boost your child?s social life. Do you have a family room with a television, DVDs, a video game console, books, board games, or other kid-friendly activities?
  2. Spend a bit of time helping your child clean her room. After all, don?t we get ready for company in advance? These efforts illustrate for kids how friends behave and how social relationships are conducted.
  3. When the play date occurs, leave the children to their own devices. Usually, two kids can figure out how to spend time. Check on them often to ensure they?re relating well. Intervene only when necessary (if play is too rowdy or loud or one or both kids seem bored).
  • Your child will begin building confidence about social relationships after just one successful play date.

Preparing your child for social relationships can be fun for all and quite rewarding. These parenting techniques are fairly simple and yield beautiful results. Help your child learn to interact with others in a positive and meaningful way as they start to explore the world outside your home.

Community Charge / Poll Tax

Introduction of the Community Charge (the Poll Tax):

The Community Charge ("Poll Tax") was a new system of taxation introduced in Scotland in 1989 and England and Wales in 1990 by the then ruling Conservative government. The Community Charge replaced the "Rates" - a system of tax where a certain amount was charged by the local council depending on the rental value of a house - with a flat rate charge paid by every adult, earning the nickname "Poll Tax" as a result. The value of the charge was set by the local authority and was intended, as was the Rates, to fund each local council?s provision of the infrastructure and services needed by each community.

Reaction to the Poll Tax:

The tax proved deeply unpopular: while students and the unemployed only had to pay a small percentage, large families using a relatively small house saw their charges go up considerably, and the tax was thus accused of saving the rich money and moving the expenses onto the poor. As the actual cost of the tax varied by council ? they could set their own levels - some areas ended up charging a great deal more; councils were also accused of using the new tax to try and obtain more money by charging more; both caused further upset.

There was widespread outcry over the tax and opposition groups formed; some advocated a refusal to pay, and in some areas large quantities of people didn?t. At one point the situation turned violent: a major march in London in 1990 turned into a riot, with 340 arrested and 45 policemen injured, the worst riots in London for over a century. There were other disturbances elsewhere in the country.

Consequences of the Poll Tax:

Margaret Thatcher, the Prime Minister of the period, had personally identified herself with the Poll Tax and was determined it should remain. Upset was directed at her and her government, undermining her position. In late 1990 she was challenged for the leadership of the party (and thus the nation) by Michael Heseltine; although she defeated him, she had not won enough votes to stop a second round and she resigned, fatally undermined by the tax. Her successor, John Major, withdrew the Community Charge and replaced it with a system similar to the Rates, once more based on a house?s value.

Key enzyme involved in protecting nerves from degeneration identified

ScienceDaily (Mar. 30, 2012) ? A new animal model of nerve injury has brought to light a critical role of an enzyme called Nmnat in nerve fiber maintenance and neuroprotection. Understanding biological pathways involved in maintaining healthy nerves and clearing away damaged ones may offer scientists targets for drugs to mitigate neurodegenerative diseases such as Huntington's and Parkinson's, as well as aid in situations of acute nerve damage, such as spinal cord injury.

University of Pennsylvanian biologists developed the model in the adult fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster.

"We are using the basic power of the fly to learn about how neurons are damaged in acute injury situations," said Nancy Bonini, senior author of the research and a professor in the Department of Biology at Penn. "Our work indicates that Nmnat may be key."

The research was published in Current Biology. First author on the study is postdoctoral researcher Yanshan Fang, with additional contributions from postdoctoral researcher Lorena Soares and research technicians Xiuyin Teng and Melissa Geary, all of Penn's Department of Biology.

When a nerve suffers an acute injury -- as might be caused by a penetrating wound, for example, or a broken bone that damages nearby tissues -- the long projection of the nerve cell, called the axon, can become injured and degenerate. The process by which it disintegrates is known as Wallerian or Wallerian-like degeneration and is an active, orderly process.

Though this function of eliminating damaged nerve cells is crucial, biologists do not have a clear understanding of all of the molecular signaling pathways that govern the process.

Bonini's lab has previously focused on chronic neurodegenerative diseases but made this foray into acute nerve injury to determine if mechanistic overlaps exist between acute axon injury and chronic neurodegeneration. They first searched for an appropriate nerve tract to target and identified the wing of adult flies as a prime option.

The fly wing is not only translucent and a site of lengthy nerve fibers that can be easily observed, but it can also be cut to cause injury without killing the fly. That way, the researchers can follow the animal's response to nerve injury for weeks.

Using various reagents to manipulate the fly's genetic traits, the team confirmed that the cut wing nerve underwent Wallerian degeneration. They then tested versions of Nmnat and another protein called WldS, all of which had previously been shown to protect nerves from degeneration, to see if any of these might stop the process. All significantly delayed neurodegeneration. Even a form of Nmnat that hadn't worked in other animal models suppressed degeneration, although to a lesser extent.

"That indicates that our assay is really sensitive," Bonini said. "This sensitivity could help us identify genes that have moderate although important functionality at protecting against nerve degeneration."

Their investigations into the wing nerve also showed that the degenerating axon "died back," fragmenting first from the axon terminals, the side farthest from the nerve cell body -- a pattern similar to what has been seen in other disorders.

Doing more genetic tinkering, the researchers showed that when the animal's own Nmnat was depleted, the nerves fragmented in the same way as if the axon was physically cut. And when Nmnat and the other "rescue" proteins were added back to these genetically modified flies, they were able to block degeneration, highlighting that Nmnat is critical to maintaining healthy axons.

In a final set of experiments, the biologists sought to narrow where in the nerve cells Nmnat might be working. They focused on mitochondria, the powerhouses of cells. When they created a genetic line of flies that blocked mitochondria from entering the axon fibers, the nerve tract degenerated, again, in a dying-back fashion. Yet now WldS and Nmnat failed to prevent axon degeneration, suggesting that those proteins may act on and require the presence of axonal mitochondria to maintain healthy nerves in normal flies.

Flipping that scenario around, they looked to see what happened to the mitochondria of flies upon nerve injury. When they cut the wing nerve axons, the mitochondria rapidly disappeared. Yet they can largely preserve the mitochrondria by increasing expression of Nmnat.

Their results, taken together with the findings of other studies, suggest that Nmnat may stabilize mitochondria in some way in order to keep axons in a healthy state.

"We have some hope that these proteins or their activity may someday serve as drug targets or could provide the foundation for a therapeutic advance," Bonini said. "But right now, my hope is that the power of the fly model will open up a lot of new directions of research and new pathways that could be targets for development in the future."

This study was supported by the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, the Fidelity Foundation and the National Institutes of Health.

Diving into the snow in Japan

Skiing at Club Med Sahoro, Japan. Picture: Chanel Parratt Source: National Features

There are activities for all ages at Club Med Sahoro in Japan. Picture: Chanel Parratt. Source: National Features

I'M NOT sure just whose idea it was to jump out of our hot tub and dive into the snow.

With steam rising from the water into the minus 10C air, snowflakes falling and surrounded by pine trees, I made a well choreographed leap.

Before I knew it, I was heading towards a pile of particularly fluffy snow, my skin tingling, trying to decide if it was hot, cold or just right.

I spent the next 20 minutes back in the tub, trying and failing to find fault with this Club Med resort situated in the centre of Japan's northernmost island, Hokkaido.

When you arrive at Club Med Sahoro, a slice of wintry paradise, you're warmly greeted by the staff (called GOs), who broadcast the number of languages they speak by sticking little flags to their name badges.

A stay at the four-trident (equivalent to 4-star) resort includes everything your room, all food and drink, lift passes, group ski and snowboarding lessons, as well as Mini Club and Junior Club for the kids, nightly entertainment, swimming pool, jacuzzi, the outdoor hot tub and more. Ski gear and equipment is available for hire.

After a quick rundown on how things worked, we were off to dinner.

The energy of Daichi, the resort's main restaurant, hits you like a welcome shot of sake.

Boisterous groups celebrate and families enjoy each other's company. Kids bump into new and old friends, taking themselves off to the buffet, relishing the independence of creating their own meals.

There are people from all over the world; on our visit, the French schools from Singapore and Hong Kong were on holidays and families from both had the place almost filled.

The food is good, fresh and varied. It's hard to imagine how they pull it off for breakfast, lunch and dinner but they do and with resounding success.

Dinners each night are usually themed Asian on our first, French on the second and Italian on the third. And you can help yourself to the well-stocked wine fridge.

The first night's meal seemed more like a la carte than buffet-style dining. Beef tataki (thin slices of seared beef) sat on beds of shredded leek with a wasabi sauce that packed a real punch.

There were also steaming bowls of shoyu (soy) ramen with a salty and slightly tangy broth. And sushi was in good supply, with nigiri, freshly cooked prawns and deep-fried tofu filled with sweet sushi rice disappearing quickly from my plate.

There are plenty of dishes to keep those with simpler tastes happy, too, such as roast lamb with steamed vegetables and gravy, grilled salmon with green beans and cherry tomatoes, curries, pasta and salads.

Breakfast included okayu rice porridge with finely chopped vegetables and delicate rolled omelets.

As Club Med is a French company, you know the bread is going to be good. Make sure you try the white chocolate loaf.

Next door at specialty restaurant Mina Mina, nabe is the main event. A portable stovetop sits in the centre of your table as you create your own steam pot, hot pot and ramen with local seafood and fresh vegetables from the self-serve bar.

We'd missed the nightly show by the time we finished dinner, so we organised our ski gear, booked our lessons and took ourselves off to bed.

A deluxe room at Club Med Sahoro is simple, with a gorgeous view of the Shintoko mountains and a very comfortable bed. A traditional Japanese-style room with tatami flooring, futons and a low-set table, it gives a real sense that you're in Japan.

Each day's activities start about 8am, when Mini and Junior Club Med first open. With skiing, snowboarding, indoor and outdoor games on offer, you can put your mind at ease the kids are going to have a great day (yes, even without you). Depending on your ski level, adult classes start between 8.45am and 9.30am.

With altitudes ranging between 400m and 1100m, Sahoro cannot claim to have the steepest runs. It is instead famed for incredible dry powder snow. There are two resorts in the area that use the 17 runs six red, five blue, six green and 3km of cross-country trail.

Venturing off the groomed slopes, Sahoro has enough tree powder to ride or ski for a week. There are seven chairlifts and the gondola, with the longest run stretching 3km and plenty of good-length cruising pistes, perfect for intermediates.

When I visited this month, the resort was about 80 per cent full but I felt like I was one of just a handful on the uncrowded slopes, which were groomed to perfection.

Expect excellent conditions from December to the end of March.

The ski-in, ski-out facilities make everything so easy, as do the GOs, who do a fantastic job entertaining children.

Parents can check children aged four to 11 into Mini Club Med and teens aged 12 to 17 into Junior Club Med for a day of adventure. This includes taking the kids to lunch in the main restaurant and afternoon snacks.

Petit Club Med for children aged two to three and Pyjama Club if you require childcare at night cost extra. All other child minding, including ski lessons each day, are included.

It's not Broadway but nightly performances by the GOs (and often your children) will have you whipping out your camera faster than you can say "winter wonderland".

Take a day off skiing and enjoy a swim in the heated pool, unwind in the sauna or ofuro (Japanese hot tub), play a game of table tennis or watch a movie in the theatre. Spa Pirka has treatments to pamper and relax you and the yoga class is a great way to stretch after a day on the slopes.

Or gear up for some outdoor adventure of a different kind think snowshoes, sleds, horse riding and snow rafting; or a day trip out to the natural hot springs by Daisetsu-zan National Park.
